The August Bank Holiday
Просмотров 259 часов назад
It was an open secret that King James I enjoyed the company of men as well as being a husband to a queen. It is well documented that he favored George Villiers, whom he made the 1st Duke of Buckingham. Do you remember the Catholic faction, including Guy Fawkes, that organised the Gunpowder Plot? Well, the same faction knew of James’s persuasion long before he inherited the throne. They engaged ...

McArthur (Sons o’ Arthur)
Просмотров 4828 дней назад
Legend, mystery, myth...King Arthur is all of these things and more. And according to Medieval writings he was even a real historical hero, although the exact details of his life have been lost in the fog of the centuries. In fact, there are many theories about Arthur but one of the most fascinating is that he was actually Scottish. Some researchers believe that he was a brave 6th century milit...
The Bell Rock Lighthouse
Просмотров 18Месяц назад
The deadly Inchcape Reef, eleven miles off the east coast of Scotland, terrorised seamen for centuries. Robert Stevenson's plans to build a lighthouse on the almost permanently submerged rocks was widely ridiculed, but against all odds, he succeeded, and it continues to save lives. An epic story of design and construction. The Bell Rock Lighthouse is considered to be an industrial wonder of the...

Honourable Mary Cathcart (1757-92), daughter of 9th Lord Cathcart, who was Ambassador to Catherine the Great. She married the Perthshire landowner Thomas Graham in 1774, and they bought Lynedoch House near Methven, Perthshire in 1787. The portrait was highly acclaimed when exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1777. Thomas Graham, devastated by his wife's premature death in 1792, placed the paintin...

Whilst it's a nice poem I'm not much the wiser on why we have a bank holiday in August other than something to do with a request in Perth to King James (6th or Scotland & 1st of England?) but didn't sound like it went down well and killed them for asking?? Perhaps you could explain the story please? Not really thought of the reason we have it other than to assume it was something to do with the banking sector, hence 'bank' holiday. Thanks

The August holiday was given in perpetuity as a reward to the people for saving his life . When he went south to London after Elizabeth died he extended it to all. I wonder if he knew the Gowrie Conspiracy had originated in England and they would try again? Which of course (always remember, don’t forget) they did.

Another fine effort Tairmuir. If you will pardon my contrary opinion we are not a virus, you posit here. We humans contain within us the spark of the Divine, whatever that is. No one could claim to understand the machinations of our cosmos, but one of the things that we DO know is that Carbon is an essential building block of life, and our breathing it is a miracle. The myths surrounding our ability to affect the weather are easily debunked by looking up the facts. Poets deserve the facts, lest those windmills begin to look like giants. The sound is clearer though.

Thanks and of course I don't mind your contrary opinion. This poem was inspired by the many night-time satellite images we've all seen of late. The trail of life across our planet just made me think.

Great. I really enjoyed this Tairmuir Thank you. You have a wonderful talent yet a terrible microphone. Maybe boost the mid frequencies on the spoken, and duck the mid frequencies on the music? It might help. You deserve fantastic audio, the best. I admire how you lay out the story, perfectly couched in descriptive narrative. Do you publish books? All the very best.

Hi Cliff, thanks, no I've nothing in print. This sounds a bit weird but I haven't the confidence to write Scots words as I'm not sure of how they are spelt. that's why I publish them here in the spoken word. All done on my phone , background traffic noises and all. Its a bit raw. A bit poor in recording quality, but its in a form I'm comfy with.

    • @CliffMcAulay

Thank you for your reply Tairmuir. Please be confident in your posy, and perhaps for the written Scots tongue, take a leaf out of 'our Rab's' book ,and invent it as you see fit when it comes to the written word. There are no rules. It would be great to read you on substack. As for you'r recording. A phone! You do well. But have a look in cash converters for a wee set up.. As I posted earlier. Art deserves the best, for it outlives all of us.@@Alastair2711

While McLean abandoned his family and was wetting his knickers over the “achievements” of Lenin in Russia, five million people died from starvation in that country between 1921-24. The only thing he achieved was to become another fawning acolyte for oppression and murder in the name of “Socialism”. He achieved nothing, absolutely nothing.

Not much broadcast seeding going on now. However its kind of him to feed the wildlife. As we all know Jethro Tull invented the seed drill, that was hailed a move forward in agriculture for a very good reason.

Could you write about the millions of white and black people who were enslaved by the ottoman empire, or the millions of white people from the slav states, or the black kings who sold these people to either the Islamic slave traders or traders from the west. The last white slave was taken in 1903 from Italy while today there are more slaves in Africa than there was back then. PS, a civil war was fought in the USA and slavery was one of the reasons, it was the south, up until 1865 they used slaves, the democrat party was the party of slavery, now they keep those same people on a political plantation.

They were better off being sold by their African owners to white Europeans than to Brown Arabs every single time, evidenced by the lack of black people in those Arab societies. Still you keep on with the race hate matey my white ancestors were slaves to exactly the same people too.
